various diseases of the baby's skin and how to treat them

It is important for every parent to recognize various problems on baby's skin and how to handle them. This is because skin disorders can make babies fussy, even cause serious health problems if not treated properly.

Babies generally have sensitive skin, so they are prone to various skin problems. An underdeveloped immune system also makes it easy to experience health problems.

Skin problems in babies are generally caused by exposure to heat, dirt, or substances that can irritate or trigger allergies.

Problems in Baby's Skin that Often Occur

There are several problems with baby's skin that parents need to know, including:

1. Diaper rash

The most frequent skin condition among infants is diaper rash. The area of skin covered by the diaper develops redness, pimples, or scaly skin due to this skin condition, which typically affects babies older than 2 years.

Baby rashes are brought on by skin abrasions from damp diapers. A fungal or bacterial infection may develop if a moist diaper is left on the skin for an extended period of time, worsening the diaper rash.

2. Dry skin

Like adults, baby's skin is also prone to dryness. There are many things that can cause a baby's skin to dry and flake, for example exposure to sunlight, cold air, and swimming pool water. Dry skin can occur anywhere on the body, but it's most common on the face.

3. Prickly heat

A common skin problem in babies is prickly heat. A baby's skin with prickly heat is characterized by small, red, itchy bumps.

Profuse sweating can appear anywhere on the body, but is most common on the neck, back, chest or thighs. This baby skin problem is often caused by hot and humid weather that makes babies sweat a lot.

4. Acne

Not only teenagers or adults, babies can also experience skin problems in the form of acne. This condition is generally temporary and can disappear by itself without leaving acne scars.

Like acne in general, baby acne is characterized by the appearance of small red or white bumps on the chin, cheeks or forehead.

Apart from the problems above, some babies can also experience atopic dermatitis or eczema. This skin problem is intermittent and is often triggered by exposure to allergy-triggering substances (allergens), such as dust, animal hair, or plant pollen.

Even though it looks trivial, skin problems in babies make them more susceptible to skin infections. If not treated properly, some skin infections can be dangerous for babies.

How to Take Care of Problematic Baby Skin

To treat and prevent problems with your little one's skin, there are several ways you can do it, namely:

  • Bath soap or special baby skin care products that are free of fragrances and parabens.
  • Avoid using certain lotions or creams without a doctor's prescription if your little one has acne. Also, avoid squeezing the pimples.
  • Avoid rubbing your little one's skin with a towel. If you want to dry and clean the skin, do it by patting it gently.
  • Avoid using diapers that are too tight and change your little one's diaper at least every 2-3 hours.
  • Apply a moisturizer that contains zinc oxide or petroleum jelly to protect your little one's skin from diaper rash.
  • Don't bathe your little one in warm water for too long. Try only about 3-5 minutes so that your little one's skin doesn't dry out.

Most skin problems in babies can heal by themselves. However, take your little one to the doctor if you have a skin rash accompanied by spots, fever, pus discharge, diarrhea, or continuous vomiting. This condition can be a sign of a serious infection that requires medical treatment.
